Through the Black
A practice of subtraction, light, and the tension of the mark
A practice of subtraction, light, and the tension of the mark

The Through the Black series emerges from a pictorial practice based on subtraction: the gesture does not add, but removes.
Incisions, abrasions, and scrapings transform the surface of the canvas into a field marked by signs that do not appear through color, but through the absence of matter.
These works revolve around the idea of an active black—a darkness that absorbs but does not erase—traversed by traces that become visible only under specific lighting conditions.
Certain portions of the surface are made transparent, allowing light to pass through and transform them.
When backlit, these areas activate the incised marks, revealing them in a shifting, almost three-dimensional perceptual dimension.
